Fiona MacDonald and Susan Norrie | Dream Home

June 24 - August 5, 2006

press release:

Opening Reception: June 24, 6:30 - 8:30pm

G Fine Art is pleased to host Dream Home, an exhibition of works by Australian artists Fiona MacDonald and Susan Norrie, curated by Ricky Subritzky.

Dream Home contemplates home making and home security, possessions and dispossessions. It enfolds us in intricate, insidious and repetitive patterns, bringing together old and new relationships between comforts and terrors. In its haunted domesticities we encounter after-shadows of imperialisms and complicated folds of capitalism.

Norrie, one of Australia’s representatives at the Venice Biennale next year, will show Twilight, a DVD-based work that documents the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, which until recently protested about Aboriginal land rights and sovereignty in a camp on the front lawn of Australia’s Provisional Parliament House. This work resonates with the biggest display of Australian art to be held in the USA since Australia’s bi centennial in 1988 – Dreaming Their Way: Australian Aboriginal Women Painters which opens at the National Museum of Women in the Arts on June 30.

MacDonald will show work that springs from her experience living in the US from 2001 to 2003. Birds of prey from Audubon’s Birds of America are painted onto shopping bags. B-1B bombers crystallize on a drape, as other warplanes merge with falling leaves in a wallpapered domestic tableau. A desk lamp spins out of real-time and America’s last Liberty Tree is painted onto one dollar bills. Liberty Trees served as rallying points for revolution during colonial times.

Dream Home is supported by the Transforming Cultures Research Centre at the University of Technology, Sydney.
