Jeff Spaulding | Mine

May 6 - June 17, 2006

press release:

Opening Reception: May 06, 6:30 - 8:30pm

G Fine Art is pleased to host Jeff Spaulding’s second one-person show with the gallery. The show titled Mine will open on Saturday May 6 and continue through June 17, 2006. There will be an opening reception for the artist Saturday May 6 from 6:30-8:30pm.

In Mine, Spaulding continues to explore the terrain of discarded urban material, uncovering in the process a wealth of psychologically biting associations. He responds to both the former life of an object as well as its simple formal qualities. By combining disparate objects, he creates relationships that are simultaneously insightful and bizarre: sexual references, the loss of childhood innocence, even the hurt of a truncated limb.

Along with the found and reinvented objects in the show, Spaulding includes personally fabricated pieces created in the studio. Three plaster wall-mounted sculptures made entirely of slightly imperfect spheres comprise what Spaulding titles Futile Dance. They, like the found object pieces, maintain an aesthetic elegance while riffing on urban detritus. They are sexual, cartoony, toy like, and playful as well as referring to life forms. Each one is directed by a small sphere that implies a consciousness to the form.

The title Mine may refer to the possessive pronoun, a place of great abundance, or the verb to excavate. The title is a key to both the process and the content of the work.

Spaulding was last seen in the 48th Corcoran Biennial (2005) curated by Jonathan Binstock.
