W C RICHARDSON

Catch & Release

June - August 2, 2014

G Fine Art is pleased to initiate programming at 4718 14th Street, NW with the exhibition, Catch & Release, by W C Richardson.

Richardson thinks about complex systems and ideas, and expresses them in dynamic color and optically intense paintings.   His canvas is an arena for acting, his painting is a complicated process that alternates focus between structure and paint.   The freehand process that Richardson employs, gives priority to paint, resulting in a work that refuses to settle into a single, stable reading.

The series, all created in 2013-2014, explores the interaction of simple rectilinear forms placed at the intersection of countervailing underlying structures.   He begins each painting with a square, orthogonal grid and a few operative rules for the interaction with freehand linear gestures that spiral or curve or otherwise deform the two dimensionality of the grid.   As layers of paint define the rectilinear forms and the ground in which  they are embedded, the operative rules and original substructures become obscured.  The viewer encounters a field of unstable connection and subsets that emerge and dissolve as attention shifts back and forth between part and whole.

Richardson's paintings have always been informed by the history and philosophical implication of the physical and cognitive sciences and mathematics.  The paintings are not however illustrations of principles or demonstrations of scientific or mathematical information.   He is most interested in how these ideas become metaphorical and allusive through their embodiment in the abstract forms of the paintings, where image and process are intertwined.

These paintings are physically wholesome and robust.   Painting thrives because it is one of the most immediate means to self expression.

Richardson received his MFA from Washington University, St Louis and his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  He is currently Chair of the Department of Art and Professor of Painting at the University of Maryland, College Park.

His work has been featured in 21 solo and over 100 group exhibitions in museums and galleries in the US, Europe and the Mid East.
