Graham Caldwell | Invisibility Cloaks

November 7 - December 12, 2015

press release:

Opening Reception: November 07, 6pm

G Fine Art is thrilled to announce Invisibility Cloaks, an exhibition of new sculptures by Graham Caldwell.
Works in Invisibility Cloaks evince Caldwell's longstanding interest in the material qualities of glass. By heating, manipulating, mirroring and (on occasion) cracking the surfaces of his sculptures, Caldwell creates mesmerizing artworks out of ostensibly mundane materials.
The glistening surfaces of works in Invisibility Cloaks register and reinterpret their surroundings. The resulting reflections are curiously distorted–shapes and shadows shift, warp and reorient themselves, ultimately coalescing into captivatingly skewed images. Caldwell's sculptures are effectively–and remarkably–photographic. Like a camera's film, the works capture every momentary shift in their environment. They draw the viewer's eye yet affront their gaze, returning a perplexing picture of the self and its surroundings.
Of the creative catalyst for Invisibility Cloaks, Caldwell states:
"I am interested in the idea of de-familiarization, of manipulating something known or expected such as window glass or one's own reflected image to produce a strange and slightly uncanny experience."
We invite you to visit the gallery and take a glimpse.
