About the publication

The mechanics of looking

G Fine Art DC describes the physical decisions a room makes about a work of art, and what each one does to the person standing in front of it.

What an entry is

Each of the twenty entries takes one variable — a centre height, a beam angle, a mount width, a viewing distance, a wall tone — and sets out what it is, what the working conventions are, and what changes when the number changes. Where a figure is published by an institution we say whose figure it is. Where a convention is a compromise, we say what it is compromising between.

How they are ordered

The five sections follow the order in which a room acts on you: how work is hung, how it is lit, where it is made to end, how large it is against your own body, and what the room around it is doing. An entry can be read alone; read in section order they build up into a description of a single hang.

What this is not

Not a gallery, not a dealer, not a listings service. There are no reviews here, no exhibition diary, no recommendations about what to buy or where to go. The photographs illustrate conditions, not shows.

Corrections

Measurements get quoted wrongly and conventions vary between institutions. If a figure here is wrong, or right only in a context we have not stated, tell us and we will correct the entry rather than footnote it. Corrections are made in the text, at the point where the error was.
